Catalog Description
REA 0002 is a college preparatory reading course which builds vocabulary skills, literal and critical comprehension skills, and successful reading strategies. Lab required. Special fee. 4 credits

Prerequisites
Placement by Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) verbal subtest score; American College Testing (ACT) Reading subtest score; or Computerized Placement Test (CPT) Reading subtest score of 51-70 or successful completion of REA0001..

Attendance
Show up and participate! There will be hands-on activities and classroom interactions that are invaluable and cannot be made-up individually; therefore, regular attendance is essential. In the event of an absence, you are responsible for obtaining class notes, information, and/or instruction from classmates. If you have more than three consecutive unexcused absences, you may be dropped from the course without notification.

Special Information That May Affect Your Grade
Readings and assignments will be posted online. I expect all work to be completed by the date assigned. If you are absent, you must make arrangements to have the assignment/s delivered to class on time. Assignments which have been turned in on time and which have earned a low mark may be re-worked and resubmitted once for re-evaluation no later that one class after it is returned. Tests and quizzes cannot be made up if missed.

Withdrawal Policy
If you are unable to continue in the course, you must fill out an official withdrawal form with the registrar’s office. If you do not officially withdraw, you may receive a U in the course.

FINAL GRADE

S (Satisfactory) = 375 to 500 points; register for REA 0003

*P (Progress) = 250 to 374 points; retake REA 0002

*U (Unsatisfactory) = Below 250 points (Retake REA 0002)

(NOTE: A “U” is equivalent to an “F” in calculating the grade point average.)

*W (Withdrawal) = Retake REA 0002

*Cost to Re-Enroll in a Course: Students who enrolled in the same course twice, received a grade of W, D F, P, U or X, and wish to re-enroll for the third time must pay the full cost of instruction for this and any later attempts. This fee is equivalent to the cost of the course for a student paying fees as a non-resident of the state of Florida. Students who are assessed the higher fee may appeal to have the fee lowered.

The consequences of academic dishonesty can range from a failing grade for the course to expulsion from MDC. Students should familiarize themselves with the Students’ Rights & Responsibilities Handbook, which can be obtained from Student Life, Room 8201.
